A Fayetteville man on the History Channel show “Alone”

Adam Riley is featured this season on the History Channel’s “Alone” and joins nine others trying to stay alive in the Canadian wilderness.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Adam Riley is a contestant in season 9 of the History Channel survival series, Only.

Riley is an alpaca shearer and treehouse builder in Fayetteville. He says he watched TV in 2020, like most during the pandemic, when he came across the survival series.

“Like a lot of people who watch the show, I thought, ‘I could probably do this,'” Riley said. “So I applied. I emailed them and applied. About six months later I got an email and it started the selection process to be in the final ten of the season.”

In 2018, he completed an 8,000 mile trip from Panama to New Zealand. He navigated the trip alone and planned to continue his trek around the world, but COVID restricted travel.

“I grew up reading adventure books and books about explorers and seafarers and that kind of stuff and I was always captivated by the sea, and I wanted to do something that really tested me and tested myself. kind of my abilities to their ultimate limits,” Riley said.

“There is no greater autonomy than being completely alone on a boat with nothing but the things you have brought with you. There is no rescue team, there is no There’s no stop button, once you weigh anchor and set off you’re really just jumping off a cliff.”

While Riley’s thirst for adventure fuels her travels, her time on Only was fueled by his love for family.

“My mum is an amazing woman. I moved here from England with my mum and brother, and she raised us as a single mum for quite a long time before she met my stepdad and moved to another country. with two kids. High school and getting into college and doing everything she’s done is, you know, she’s like one of my heroines,” Riley said.

“Winning the half million dollars was a big motivator for me because I want to be able to help my family the same way they helped me when I was young.”

Being stripped of everything but his clothes, 10 tools and camera gear alone in Labrador, Canada brought quite a few lessons.

“The most important mental tool I had was to keep my sense of humor and to keep having fun even when it was tough, even when I was really hungry,” Riley said.

“Every day I was reminded of how grateful I was to be there, what an amazing experience it was and just trying to have fun, you know.”
