Expert in Cellular Cancer Therapies Named President of USC Viterbi BME

Precision Medicine Research Director Professor Peter Yingxiao Wang to Join USC Viterbi School of Engineering on January 1, 2023, while the new vshair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Wang – who pioneered work on controllably engineered cells to directly target tumors – will also be jointly appointed at the USC Keck School of Medicine. He will direct two research laboratories which will be housed in the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Biosciences on the UPC Campus and the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center on the USC Health Sciences Campus.

Wang comes to USC Viterbi after ten years as a faculty member at the University of California, San Diego, where as a professor of bioengineering he pursued cutting-edge research in cancer immunotherapy and cell imaging. More recently, Wang and his collaborators have developed a revolutionary therapy harnessing focused ultrasound (FUS) to remotely control specially engineered immune cells, called FUS-CAR T-cells, to target and destroy solid tumors with high accuracy in space and timewhile avoiding Side effects and toxicity on healthy tissue.

Wang’s role will further strengthen USC Viterbi’s research capacity in precision medicine, while forging stronger collaborations with the Keck School of Medicine.

“I am delighted that Peter has decided to join us as the new Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at USC,” said USC Viterbi Dean Yannis C. Yortsos. He will lead a remarkable department — the first biomedical engineering department on the west coast — with a the story of landmark achievements in this critical area, at the crossroads of engineering, Medication and health sciences. Wang said he was excited to join the department, noting that USC was positioned at a unique advantage, thanks to the depth of research and teaching excellence in its engineering and medical schools. .

“We already have a very strong biomedical engineering department with several rising stars who have been recently promoted, combined with the existing strengths of senior faculty and, of course, our fabulous students,” Wang said. “We’re really strong in both engineering and medicine, and one thing I’d like to push is for more privacy and systematic collaboration between USC Viterbi and the Keck School, as well as the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“This is a really exciting trend for the future of our service, giving us the opportunity to bring our cutting-edge technology directly to patients, where we can really help people.”

Wang said that through increased collaboration, he looks forward to breaking down silos and shortening the pipeline from research and discovery to patient applications of therapies and technologies. He said he also wanted the BME department to expand its considerable strengths in precision medicine.

“We have talentfaculty of education work in this area already, as Associated Professor Stacey Finley who works on the analysis of immune cell signaling, Associated Teacher Megan McVSain who works on stem cell and tissue engineering, Associate Professor Eun Ji Chung, who is to look at how we can deliver the genetic and therapeutic Materials more effectively for different locations in the body, and Associated Professor Keyue Shen who works on immune-engineering approaches,” Wang said. “This is in addition to our superior head teacher, as Professors David D’Argenio, Michael Khoo, Vasilis MarmarelisFrancisco Valero CueGo, and Ellis Meng on biomedical modeling, mmachine learning, neuromuscular control and medical devices, and Teachers Qifa Zhou and Jesse Yenwho are leaders in ultrasound technology.

We also have a promising and strong junior group Facultyas Assistant Professors Christina Zavaleta on molecular imaging, Jennifer Treweek on quantitative histopathology, and Maral Moussavi on biomedical sensors and diagnostics. Together with other first professors in the departement, As Ted Berger, Gerald Leob, Bartlett Email and Stan Yamashiro, It will provide more opportunities to collaborate, refine our skill and at make our ultrasonically controllable CAR-T cell system even more powerful and precise, Wang said.

Wang received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Peking University, Beijing in 1992 and 1996, in mmechanical and in Fluid mmechanical, respectively. He moved to California where he earned his doctorate. diploma in Bioengineering of the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering in 2002, before continuing his postdoctoral work under Professor of Bioengineering Shu Chien and Professor Roger Y. Tsien of the Department of Pharmacology.

Prior to joining UCSD as a professor in 2012, he was an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and a full-time faculty member at the Institute. Beckman for Advanced Science and Technology from the University of Illinois. He was also affiliated at UIUC with the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology, Neuroscience Program, Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, and Institute of Genomic Biology.

Wang is a recipient of the Wallace H. Coulter Competitive Early Career Award and has also received the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and the Independent Scientist Award from the National Institutes of Health.

He is a friend of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the International Academy of Medical and Biological Engineering (IAMBE), and the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES).

Wang will take over chairs role of Acting Department Chairs David Z. D’Argenio, Michael Khoo and Vasilis Marmaralis, who will continue to serve as such until January 2023.
