2) Details

The devil is always in the details. To one man, everyone in the program who was here for the 2019 season-opening win over Eastern Illinois says something to the effect, “Man, it’s not the same team “.

The Panthers are coming off a narrow loss to defending champion MAC in Northern Illinois and present challenges on both sides of the ball. It was an impressive start for coach Chris Wilkerson, an EIU alumnus. So much so that even in the event of a loss, his team now receives votes among other things in the AFCA FCS Top 25 Coaches where Chattanooga comes in at No. 10.

The Mocs were 3-3 on the road a year ago. The three losses were 12 points combined at Kentucky (23-28), VMI (34-37 OT) and Mercer (6-10). The three wins were 29.0 ppg at North Alabama (20-0), Samford (55-13) and Wofford (35-10).

3) History

There’s not too much. And by not much… we mean a meeting. It was the 24-10 victory in 2019 in Rusty Wrightis the first.

4) Superstitions

At, we are not Great stitious, but we are one little stitious. So here are some links to the past that hopefully bode well for this weekend.

Last week, we mentioned that the last time the program had won a home opener was in 2019 against next week’s opponent EIU. This week’s rating is the last time the Mocs won their first road contest of 2021 against next week’s current opponent… North Alabama.

5) 3 notes to write down

  • QC Preston Hutchinson kicked off his UTC career with success completing 11 of 18 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown. He spread the wealth by connecting with eight different pass catchers – 6 WR, 1 RB and 1 TE.
  • 46-17-2 against current OVC members: Austin Peay (6-1); Eastern Illinois (1-0); Murray State (2-0); UT Martin (4-2); Tennessee State (3-4-2) and Tennessee Tech (30-10).
  • 162 yards (19 carries) was At Ailym Ford 12th 100-yard game and fourth with over 150.

bonus thing

Since we were light on the game story, we thought the player story strength suffice. So a nod to two favorites from the box press…

Ailym Ford has 2,406 career rushing yards. It is the eighth all-time at UTC. With 52 yards on Saturday, he will move up to sixth after Eldra Buckley ’06 (2,437) and Erroll Wynn ’10 (2,457). He’s 591 yards south of the top 5 with Derrick Craine ’16 in fifth with 2,997.

Devonnsha Maxwell is third in sacks with 30.5 for his career. He needs 1.0 to pass second pass Keionta Davis ’16 (31.0) and 6.5 from SoCon and school record holder Davis Tull ’14 (37.0). Maxwell is second among current FCS players.
